Steven Foy.  Artist’s statement

I was born in Manchester.  I moved south to study art in the 1980s, where I became enthralled with abstraction and its painterly and poetic possibilities.

I have absorbed the urban landscape of my time growing up in the north, later that of London.  In addition, my experience of the English Kent countryside and the seaside town of Ramsgate have provided me with an abundance of visual reference.

More recently I have returned to the north of England, settling in the Blackpool area.

I make work from my observations and experiences of colour, structure, space and my interest in industrial process.  Here my preoccupation with the contradictions and contrast between man-made-order and organic growth come together and are interpreted in paint and other materials.
